From pages to possibilities: Making space for the new-generation library

Challenge

Libraries aren’t what they used to be. They’re offering newer and more resources than ever before. And their role within their communities is also expanding—especially in the aftermath of the pandemic and in the ever-churning surge of streaming platforms.

How does a library successfully tell that story? And in a way that leaves space for what the library will become in the future?

This was the task posed to us by Poudre Libraries. They needed a new brand identity. One that matched their myriad services and partnership-building role within Northern Colorado.

Solution

Our creative strategy revolved around the idea of space. We recognized that Poudre Libraries’ competitors are not other libraries but, rather, other places of connection—whether online or down the block. This insight—gleaned from stakeholder interviews we conducted and from the Libraries’ own survey data—allowed us to build a flexible identity that not only gives the organization space to explore, but also their patrons.

Speaking of exploring the space… we worked with the Poudre Libraries outreach team to create a stop-the-traffic-flow van wrap for Evie, their new mobile library. The wrap design merged the new core brand elements with digital renderings of a local mural created by renowned illustrator Rafael López.
